Bridging the Gaps in Phonics at KS1
 

Who should attend:
KS1 teachers, English Subject Leaders

Outline/Objectives:

This 2 - hour online training session is designed to support KS1 teachers and English Subject Leaders with identifying gaps in pupils' phonic knowledge in order to secure rapid progress in both reading and spelling. A range of assessment approaches will be shared, together with strategies for teaching key aspects of learning from across the phonics phases. Strengthening the links between phonics reaching and application in reading will be a key focus throughout the session. The effective use of differentiation and intervention to maximise pupils' progress will also be explored.
Course objectives:
  • To unpick key aspects of phonic knowledge essential for progress in reading and spelling at KS1.
  • To explore a range of strategies for assessing pupils' phonic knowledge.
  • To understand how to address gaps in phonic knowledge through quality first teaching, differentiation and intervention.
  • To develop our understanding of the relationship between phonics and reading.
