Accelerating progress in Reading at KS1

Who should attend:
KS1 teachers, English Subject Leaders


This 2 - hour online training session will examine the range of reading skills which contribute to pupil progress throughout KS1. Strategies to support decoding, fluency and reading comprehension will be shared, together with guidance on using assessment to identify areas of weakness. The KS1 Teacher Assessment Framework for Reading will also be unpicked in order to support Year 2 teachers with making judgments at the end of the summer team. Evidence - based teaching approaches proven to accelerate progress in reading will be shared and the correlation between phonic knowledge and reading attainment explored.
Course objectives:
  • To understand how different aspects of reading (decoding, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension) contribute to progress across Key Stage One.
  • To understand how reading assessments can be used diagnostically to identify gaps in specific aspects of reading.
  • To explore key teaching strategies proven to enhance progress across all aspects of reading.
  • To reflect on the Key Stage 1 Teacher Assessment Framework for Reading and discuss implications for teaching reading in Year 2 during the summer term.
