This 2-hour online training session is designed to support Reception teachers with identifying gaps in pupils’ phonic knowledge in order to secure progress in both early reading and writing. A range of assessment approaches will be shared, together with strategies for prioritising and teaching key elements of phonics. Strengthening the links between phonics teaching and application in reading will be a key focus throughout the session. The effective use of differentiation and intervention to maximise pupils’ progress will also be explored.
- To unpick the key aspects of phonic knowledge essential for progress in early reading and writing.
- To explore a range of strategies for assessing pupils’ phonic knowledge.
- To understand how to address gaps in phonic knowledge through quality first teaching, differentiation and intervention.
- To develop our understanding of the relationship between phonics and early reading.
